Goals

Market Street links Downtown Youngstown and YSU to the region’s retail and employment hub along US 224. It connects iconic Youngstown and Boardman neighborhoods and regional assets like Mill Creek Park, the Southern Park Mall, and Newport District. Market Street is a reminder of the Valley’s prosperous past and an exciting opportunity for future redevelopment.

Project Goals

Objectives

Market Street is WRTA’s busiest bus line. WRTA connects neighborhoods along Market Street to jobs, education, shopping and health care. Market Street Transit Oriented Development (TOD) Comprehensive Plan is a year-long study led by WRTA to explore ways to improve bus service and stops/stations and upgrade bike/pedestrian mobility while determining ways to redevelop the Market Street corridor.

The Market Street TOD Comprehensive Plan has three major objectives:

Development

  • Stimulate local and regional economy
  • Attract investment
  • Connect residents to job opportunities
  • Provide employers with access to new labor markets Promote new types of development
  • Redevelop under-utilized land

Transportation

  • Benefit existing and attract new transit customers
  • Expand transit access and connections
  • Improve passenger amenities
  • Leverage transit investment to support bicycle, pedestrian, streetscape improvements

Quality of Life

  • Make the corridor a safer place to live, work, travel
  • Provide residents with better access to services, jobs, educational opportunities
  • Expand housing opportunities
  • Reduce carbon emissions and improve the environment
